DIRECTING or CINEMATOGRAPHY
DIRECTING
The first semester of the program is driven by workshops, course work, consultations and film projects. Practical exercises include directing drama, working with actors, script writing, production, film analysis, casting, rehearsals and more.
The show reel development and directing for commercials and music videos are part of the first semester. The sessions will introduce students specifically to the world of the director on commercial productions. Students will go through all the steps of the process: scouting locations, planning shots, casting, shooting, and editing the commercials or music videos. Each student will direct one commercial or music video.
The semester also incorporates preproduction and preparation for the films which will be shot during the second semester and a visit to the infamous Bergman center on the island of Fårö.
During the second semester all students direct one 15-30 minute long shortfilm each and can choose to shoot their films on URSA or ALEXA. Students are in production for 45 to 60 days.
Elements of the second semester include: preproduction and consultations, production of films, post production, and seminars on sales, festivals and distribution. The school has great relationships with festivals and will help you find a festival for your film. Teachers method of working on the students’ scripts really helps to find out problems and makes the student solve them in a creative way. |
I came to this school knowing very a few things about cinematography and now I feel comfortable, also having several cinematography teachers in their differences works very well. Shooting in 16mm was fantastic experience and learning. Great! |
It was very good also the opportunity to collaborate between classes. I loved my time here this was really one of the best and most intense periods of my life. |

INFORMATION REGARDING YOUR STAY IN SWEDEN
VISA FOR NON-EU STUDENTS
Non-EU students need to apply for student visa. Click here for information about how to apply for student visa.
HEALTH INSURANCE
EU/EEA/Swiss citizens -you should register for a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) in your home country before coming to Sweden. This card gives you the right to medical care at the same cost as Swedes.
Non-EU/EEA citizens: stays of less than one year – If you have a residence permit valid for a period of less than a year, you won’t have access to the public health insurance. Students who aren’t covered by the public health insurance must arrange for their own insurance coverage, as medical treatment can be very expensive without any form of insurance. It’s highly recommended to arrange for health insurance from your home country so that you’re covered during your trip to Sweden and as soon as you arrive.
ACCOMMODATION
ACCOMMODATION
Stockholm Film School does not have the possibility to offer accommodation for students.
The average price range for rooms in Stockholm is €400 to €1000 a month depending of the distance to the city centre.
There are several webpages that offer accommodations, for example blocket.se and andrahand.se. Although the majority of rentals posted online are legit, you should always follow these three simple rules for your safety:
1. Never pay before signing the contract.
2. Ask the landlord for their personal id when signing the contract to validate their information (they will do the same with you so don’t be shy).
3. Pay the deposit only to a Swedish bank account.
